The short answer
Most wood decks need to be restained every two to three years to stay protected from sun, moisture and wear (HomeAdvisor, June 2026). In North Carolina’s hot, humid summers, decks in full sun often need it at the shorter end. Nationally, staining a deck costs about $850 on average, with most homeowners paying $550–$1,250, or roughly $1–$4 per square foot.
Sooner for decks in full sun or with heavy foot traffic.

Signs your deck needs stain now
- The water test. Sprinkle water on the boards. If it beads, the stain is still working; if it soaks in and darkens the wood, it’s time.
- Gray, faded wood. Sun breaks down the wood’s surface and turns it gray.
- Peeling or worn paths. Stain wears first on stairs and in front of doors.
- Mildew or green spots. Shady, damp decks hold moisture — common under North Carolina trees.

Deck staining cost
National figures from HomeAdvisor. Railings, stairs and condition move the price more than the deck’s size.
Which stain: transparent, semi-transparent or solid?
More pigment, more protection. The pigment in stain is what blocks the sun. A semi-transparent or solid stain usually outlasts a clear sealer — but hides more of the wood’s grain.
Should you stain or paint a deck?
For deck boards, stain is usually the better choice. Paint forms a film on top of the wood; on a horizontal surface that takes foot traffic, rain and sun, that film can crack and peel, and redoing it means scraping. Stain soaks into the wood and wears away gradually, so recoating is simpler. Railings, posts and trim are a different story — many homeowners paint or use a solid color there, like the black railings in our photos.

How we stain a deck
- Clean. Dirt, mildew and old graying are washed off so the stain can soak in.
- Dry and prep. The wood has to dry before staining; loose boards and nails are noted, and rough spots sanded.
- Protect. Siding, doors, plants and the patio below are covered.
- Stain. Boards, stairs and railings are stained in the product and color you chose.
We also stain porch ceilings — see the stained wood ceiling in our Concord painting gallery. Planning more exterior work? Read how much it costs to paint a house.
