The short answer
It depends on what you renovate — and on what happens before anyone picks up a tool. These are the construction ranges we publish for our own projects in Concord and the Charlotte metro:
1–2 weeks for a refresh on the current layout; 3–5 weeks for a complete remodel with a custom tile shower.
1–3 weeks for a refresh, 4–6 for a full mid-range remodel, 6–10 when walls or plumbing move.
A system replacement on existing ductwork is usually about a day; paint and floors depend on size and prep.
Whole-house projects combine those pieces. One recent example from our reviews: a 1996 home with three full bathrooms, refinished hardwood, new carpet and pool regrouting — renovated in about a month.
The time before construction starts
Most delays happen before the first day on site. Plan for these steps:
Buying the house? Use the time before closing. If you get the estimate during your due diligence, materials can be chosen and ordered while you close — so construction can start soon after you get the keys. See renovation estimates for home buyers.

In what order do the rooms get done?
- Behind the walls first. Plumbing, electrical and HVAC changes come before drywall and paint.
- Kitchens and bathrooms next — they have the longest lead times and the most trades.
- Paint before floors in most projects, so new floors aren’t splashed; trim touch-ups at the end.
- Final walkthrough with you, room by room, before we call it done.
What makes a renovation take longer
- Changing your mind mid-project. Deciding in 3D first avoids most of this.
- Special-order materials with long lead times.
- Hidden damage found once walls are open — we stop, show you photos and price it in writing before doing any extra work.
- Living in the house during the work, which means phasing rooms instead of doing everything at once.

How to plan your move-in
If you’re buying, the smoothest path is: estimate during due diligence → order materials before closing → build right after closing → move in to a finished home. If you already own the house, plan around the rooms you need most — usually the kitchen and one bathroom.
